The month-long, delightful Food Carnival and Extravaganza is back. With the start of Ramadhan here in Malaysia today, you can find stalls selling varieties of mouth-watering food and drinks for the breaking of fast everywhere in Langkawi from today right up to 30th. September. It is known as the Ramadhan Bazaar or “Pasar Ramadan” in Malay. The bazaars normally will be open daily from 4pm and closes at about 7.15pm ( right before the breaking of fast).

The month of Ramadhan is the ninth month in the Islamic lunar calendar, and is a month where Muslims must fast (”puasa” in Malay) from sunrise till sunset.

It is a month for spiritual reflection, prayers, and essentially training the body and mind to be a good, righteous, complete and perfect Muslim.

Fasting is not only forgoing food and drink from sunrise till sunset, but also “fasting” of the mind from unhealthy thoughts, the mouth from uttering bad words, the ears from listening untrue gossips about others, and the eyes from looking at prohibited matters.

The Ramadhan Bazaars (or Pasar Ramadan in Malay) are different from night markets in the sense that these Ramadhan Bazaars sell mostly food and drinks for the breaking of fast.

As in previous years, there will be a variety of delicacies and freshly baked treats to tempt the eye from basketfuls of kuih (local 1 cake) assortment to rows of side dishes and drinks to complement a family dinner.

There is no better time for locals and tourists to titillate taste buds than by touring the various buka puasa (breaking of fast) spots and trying out the various delicacies each site offers during the month-long Ramadhan Bazaar. Two main Ramadhan Bazaars here are located in down town Kuah (Pandak Mayah area) and Padang Matsirat near the Langkawi Airport while you can find smaller bazaars or other licences stalls everwhere throughout Langkawi.

This is the time when tourists can join Malaysian Muslims and non-Muslims alike to savour authentic Malay dishes offered by street vendors and restaurants in hotels throughout the fasting month.

VARIETIES OF FOOD AND DRINKS

The food traders, who are given temporary license at allotted spaces by the local authority, sells usually under canopies and huge umbrellas.

Stalls are normally set up as early as 4pm and by late evening they would be packed with people of all races. For the stall traders, some of them part-timers, it is a time when they can earn extra income for the family to be used for buying essentials and luxuries to celebrate Hari Raya Aidil Fitri.

These stalls attract Muslims and non-Muslims alike to their special once-a-year delicacies and favourite foods.

Spice and Rose Petal.

The Spice flavour (top) was light and refreshing, almost a sorbet, with hints of cinnamon, cardamom and ginger. The Rose Petal was a richer and milkier dessert; the rose petal flavour was interesting, but I found the milk a tad overpowering.

Breakfasts at Feast, the coffee house, were equally lavish affairs and we frequently found ourselves unable to stomach lunch.

Eggs any way you want them! Really enjoyed the fluffy, puffy omelettes!

Fresh loaves of bread

Smoked fish - they alternated between mackerel and tuna. Both equally satisfying with fresh bread and Lurpak butter.

Tabbouleh & Hummus also made an appearance. Didn't think they went down well at breakfast but they WERE good!

Action Station #2 fired up the grill for breakfast lamb chops, sausages, beef bacon; also dished up an addictive porridge with condiments galore.

The hot items changed daily - on the day I brought my camera, they had these plum grilled tomatoes

a passable roesti and many other favourites like baked beans, meatballs, fried rice. There were also fixed stations for nasi lemak section with curries and DIY noodle soup.

This novel themed restaurant caters to tourists visiting Langkawi who can select their own live seafood from the restaurant\'s tanks or even catch them with rods and reels provided in the adjoining fish farm (daylight hours only).

The fish are wild --- netted at sea and brought live to the fish farm to be grown to ideal market size. The fish farm is interesting to visit and can be accessed via a long walkway over the sea. Meals are served in an airy open pavilion with sea views in a garden setting. Meals are prepared Chinese style, fried, steamed or as soups. Fresh juices and cold beer is served and credit cards (Visa, Master & Amex) are accepted.

Dayang Bunting Island, Langkawi

Pulau Dayang Bunting (Island Of The Pregnant Mermaid) is the second largest island of the Langkawi archipelago, second only to Pulau Langkawi itself. Located at a distance of about 17.6 km from Kuah Town, Pulau Dayang Bunting is accessible from Kuah Jetty or Pantai Cenang through a 15 minute boat ride.

The island derives its name from Tasik Dayang Bunting (Lake of the Pregnant Maiden), the largest lake on Langkawi. The lake and the island are shrouded in legend. Tales of Mambang Sari and Mat Teja's ill-fated love story loom over one's mind as one cools off in the scintillating waters of the lake. The story of Mat Teja's courtship of his beloved and their sweet romantic endeavors take the tourists back into the world of nymphs and genies. Their love child did not survive long and the anguished mother bid her son farewell. The child is believed to have assumed the form of a white crocodile as she placed him in his watery grave. This crocodile guards the lake till date, natives hold, and is said to appear only to the pure at heart. Mambang Sari, overflowing with maternal affection and distraught at such a fortuity, blessed the waters that took her son into their fold with magical qualities. Since then, the natives believe that a sip of the waters of Tasik Dayang Bunting endows fertility to any childless woman.

Gua Langsir (Cave of the Banshee), located on the western shore of the island, is another major attraction of the island. The natives superstitiously believe the existence of a banshee haunting the interiors of this dark cave. However the name may also be associated with the banshee like wail created by the howling of the wind. Many attribute this wail purely to the acoustics of the cave. Thousands of bats are known to inhabit this cave. The Gua Langsir is located stop a 91 m limestone hillock, about 8 km north of the only jetty. This jetty has been fashioned in a small cove to aid tourists alight their boats before proceeding to explore the Pulau Dayang Bunting.

Pulau Dayang Bunting is famed for the mangrove swamplands and the dense tropical rainforests it encompasses. A vast variety of birds such as the kite, woodpecker, hornbill, drongo and kingfisher nest here and Pulau Dayang Bunting the ornithologist's Eden.

The least time consuming way (albeit more expensive) to reach Langkawi are the direct air services from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi, provided by Malaysia Airlines on a daily basis and Air Asia five times weekly.

Getting Around

Residential-cum-commercial centre in Langkawi

A memorandum of understanding was recently signed between Coco International Ltd and AUF Properties Sdn Bhd to develop the centre on an eight-hectare site.

Coco International, an international investment company based in Ras Al Khaimah, the United Arab Emirates, will fund the project.

AUF Properties, a local company specialising in luxury property, will oversee the project's development.

Speaking after the MoU signing ceremony at Wisma Darulaman, Coco International director Donald Starkey said the joint venture was the company's first investment in Southeast Asia.
Tanjung Rhu was chosen because of its natural setting and because AUF Properties had submitted an economically as well as environmentally sustainable project, he said.

Also present were AUF Properties director Fazlan Azri Tajudin and state Housing, Local Government and Rural Development committee chairman Datuk Phahrolrazi Zawawi, who represented Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak.

Marine police arrested a man held cigarettes

LANGKAWI: Marine police ar- rested a man and seized 1,450 cartons of cigarettes worth RM104,000 at the Kuala Sungai Menghulu jetty near Kuah here early yesterday.

A police spokesman said the 39-year-old man was nabbed while he and two others were unloading the contraband from a van and a car to a boat at 3am.

The three fled when five officers closed in.

One of them was nabbed after a scuffle but the other two managed to escape.

The vehicles and the boat have also been seized.
