ALOR SETAR, May 27 (Bernama) -- The Kedah government plans to have direct flights between Langkawi and Kish in Iran, to lure more Iranian tourists to the state's legendary island.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak said efforts would be made by the state government to make the flight a reality.

"We want tourists in Kish to also come to Langkawi," he told reporters after receiving Iranian Ambassador to Malaysia, Mahdi Khandagh Abadi, at Wisma Darul Aman, here today.

During the meeting, they discussed, beside tourism, on joint ventures in agriculture and education.

Meanwhile, Abadi said more than 40,000 tourists from Iran visited Malaysia every year and that Langkawi was among their favourite destinations.

He said a company in Iran was keen to provide a direct flight between Kish and Langkawi.

Langkawi and Kish should be promoted as both islands provide a good destination for tourists, especially from Muslim countries, he added.

Adabi also said he was impressed with the higher learning institutions in Kedah, which he said was of good quality and located away from the busy cities.

He said the Iranian government was prepared to have exchange programmes between students and lecturers in Kedah and Iran.

After around 600 metres, the cable car reaches the first station, where you disembark to either; take another cable car up to the peak, or lull around the observatory deck and admire the magnificent surroundings. Most will not spend too long here, as the view from the peak is even more amazing. After a short queue, you can grab another cable car and ride up another wire cable which doesn’t rise too sharply, though the initial jolt of the car leaving the second station can feel quite unnerving.

As the car settles to a decent speed after the brief spurt from the station, passengers will be treated to an even higher view of the rainforest and hills below. The car here is at its coolest and in too short a time, you’ll reach the final station which is where most of the excitement is. Passengers leaving the cab will be greeted by a menagerie of stalls selling souvenirs, toys, snacks and drinks.

You’ll want to climb a set of staircases that cuts through a thin forest to reach the observatory deck above. Once on the top, you can finally enjoy the magnificent view of the surrounding horizon; the island’s landscape, skyline and seas beyond. At the side is a steel bridge suspended across Mount Mat Cincang and a neighbouring mountain. Walking across this bridge is a fantastic experience and offers a different viewpoint of the island and sea towards the north.

After immersing yourself in the views, it’ll be time to go, and the entire process of cable-car ascent is repeated in a descending route. Along the way, you can pick up some souvenirs at the final or base station before carrying your adventures elsewhere in the magnificent island of Langkawi.

How does a lone spa venture help conserve the environment?

For newly opened Langkawi Discovery Spa, giving 10 percent of its monthly revenues to environment projects is its contribution in saving Mother Earth.

“Langkawi is an organic spa which uses real essential oils. Apart from being a center where people relax, we want the spa to be the hangout of environmentalists and other like-minded individuals,” said spa founder and director Sheila Mendez.

Sheila, a registered nurse, put up the spa with husband, Edward, who is engaged in human resource deployment.

They started in September 2008. About the same time, the couple met Fr. Tito Soquiño of theSto. Niño Foundation and began to discuss how they can help the environment.

“We became interested to help so we decided that part of our revenue will go to the Save the Danajon Reef Project,” said Edward.

The Danajon Reef which is located between the islands of Bohol, Leyte and Cebu, is one of the world's few double barrier reefs.

Edward is also one of the directors representing Visayas and Mindanao in the national board of the Spa Association of the Philippines (Sapi).

In November 2008, Edward attended the spa management training course in Cebu organized by Sapi to gain more knowledge and skills in putting up their first spa venture.

The couple invested P3 million and opened Langkawi last May 6 in a 160-square meter space in Park Mall, Mandaue City, Cebu.

It can accommodate 14 people at one time and employs 16 therapists.

A one-hour massage, including a foot wash, costs P390, while a 90-minute massage costs P570.

Its signature massages are the Kondalini Energy Revitalizing Massage, Swedish Touch Therapy and Namikotsi Shiatsu.

SPA PROFESSIONALS

Sheila said a primary goal of Langkawi is to help professionalize the spa industry in the country by adopting globally accepted standards.

To ensure that the spa is well run, Edward underwent training for spa operators, which included knowledge of the massage sequence that complies with the standards of the European Union (EU).

The EU has a wellness program which aims to educate spa owners in the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand.

In the Philippines, he said, the goal is to produce 10,000 spa professionals who meet EU standards.

Sheila noted the use of real essential oils and comprehensive training for its therapists are two crucial factors to be considered.

“Most spa centers use mineral oil but this is not good for the body because prolonged use of mineral oil will endanger the body circulation system,” she said.

Langkawi therapists use grape seed oil as base carrier oil. This is mixed with lavender, cedar wood, bergamot, rosemary and lemon grass among others.

“These essential oils have different therapeutic healing facilities in the body,” she said.

Comprehensive training of therapists is important.

She said some of Langkawi's 16 therapists were “trained from scratch.” Therapists were trained since December 2008.

“These are people who come from poor families and do not have jobs. We trained them for five months,” she added.

PASSION

Any person who plans to open a spa center should have a passion for the wellness industry, said Edward.

“If you run it just for profit, you'll just get frustrated because the volume of customers in Cebu is not that big compared to Manila,” he said.

Sheila said there should be willingness to share knowledge and skills and the heart to help people.

Plans to open two more branches in Cebu City are already in the pipeline.

Sheila said they also looking forward to open the business for partnerships and launch branches in Tagbilaran City, Bohol, Cagayan De Oro and Manila among others.

New brand Langkawi Mango

"Langkawi Mango" will be the new brand name for the Chokanan Langkawi mango produced in this island.

Federal Marketing Authority (Fama) fresh produce marketing senior director Ahmad Ishak told Bernama here today the new name was easier to pronounce and was more suited to the Langkawi name.

Fama targets to market 60 tonnes of "Langkawi Mango" this year and so far has sourced 17.05 tonnes from farmers growing the popular fruit.

Sime Darby develop Eagle Cove

The Federal government is ready to help Sime Darby with the development of the RM7.5 billion Eagle Cove project in Pantai Kok in Langkawi, Kedah.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcob said the project is to be developed under four phases encompassing the construction of a hospital, residential area, resort, a convention centre and an international standard commercial complex.

He said the project, to cover over 160 hectares, is expected to take 10 years for development and could make Malaysia a second home for foreigners once fully completed by Sime Darby Property.

"The Federal Government will be discussing with the state government of Kedah if there are areas involving the state government," he told reporters after attending a briefing in Langkawi yesterday on the project by managing director of Sime Darby Property Datuk Tunku Putra Badlishah.

Nor Mohamad said the project is expected to create 3,000 job opportunities for the locals.

The company will be based in Langkawi and the cars will be built at the company’s workshop with an initial batch of 100 units. No price indicated yet but the company will call it the Helang, which is probably a reference to the eagles found in Langkawi Island.

With a fiberglass body the car had better be intended only for slow speed cruising as I doubt the shell would have much crash safety capabilities engineered into it.

Langkawi is an archipelago that consists of 99 islands in the Andaman Sea, south of Thailand, 30km off the mainland coast of northwestern Peninsular Malaysia. The islands are a part of Malaysia's Kedah state, but are adjacent to the Thai border. By far the largest of the islands is the eponymous Pulau Langkawi (Langkawi Island) with a population of some 45,000, the only other inhabited island being nearby Pulau Tuba.

GETTING THERE

But many still prefer the more adventurous crossing by fast air-conditioned boats from Kuala Perlis or Kuala Kedah on the mainland. Some even take the special ferry services from Penang Island. The usual jump-off points are from Kuala Perlis (approx. 45 mins.) and Kuala Kedah (approx 90 mins.). The one-way fare from Kuala Kedah is RM23.00.

From Penang to Langkawi - Ferry trips average 3 hours each way. From Penang, 8.15 am and 8.30 am ferry trips but ask if the ferry stops at Pulau Payar to pick/drop passengers. Avoid the Pulau Payar one as it saves about 15-20 mins. From Langkawi, the ferry trips to Penang are at 2.30pm and 5.30pm. Price for return trip (you can have an open booking for the trip back - confirm while you are on Langkawi island later) is RM105 per person. You can park your car at the parking space in front of the Penang Clock Tower for RM12 for the 1st day and RM6 for subsequent days. It is safe to do so - guarded at night by the Chinese who take the parking fee from you.

Islands Hopping - For about RM40 (about USD12) you can join the islands hopping. You will be brought to several islands around Langkawi, usually the Pregnant Maiden Island and Pulau Beras Basah. You will also have the chance to feed the eagles along the way. The island hopping takes about 6 hours. This is a very popular and sought after service, inquire from the hotel. They have pick-up service from your hotel.
Birdwatching - there are over 200 species of birds to spot.
Take the Cable Car to the summit of Gunung Mat Cincang at 700m to walk across the sky bridge and have a spectacular view of the islands including neighbouring Thailand. Valuable Trip. RM25 per adult. Seven Wells (Telaga Tujuh) - This waterfall is named after the seven natural pools along its path. Legend has it that fairies used to come down to the pools to bathe and frolic. There are 2 viewing areas at Telaga Tujuh. The lower area is at the base of the waterfall and the higher area is where the 7 pools are. Be warned, to get to the 7 pools, you would have to climb 300+ steps which can get quite slippery when wet. As with most Malaysian tourist sites, the toilet facilities are not maintained and rubbish is strewn everywhere.

The Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry is confident that the Malaysian Agriculture Research Development Institute (Mardi) is capable of producing fruits all-year round to be savoured by tourists visiting the Mardi Agro Technology Park here.

Its minister Datuk Noh Omar said many foreign tourists wanted to look at the fruiting trees and taste the fruits, such as starfruit and pineapple, at the park.

"Mardi has the expertise to grow trees that can produce fruits all-year round at its agro technology parks in Langkawi and Cameron Highlands," he told a news conference after visiting the park, here, today.

The 27.39ha park, which is developed also for agro-tourism, grows more than 20 types of fruit like rambutan, jackfruit, guava, mango, durian and oranges, as well as vegetables and ulam.

Noh said Mardi's expertise had also attracted foreign countries like Nigeria to learn from the agro technology it had developed, including in rice cultivation.

He said the ministry would like the private sector to further develop the agro park here by building chalets for tourists to stay.

The park received 23,995 visitors in 2008, from 18,820 in 2007 and 9,206 in 2006, with over 80 per cent of them being foreigners.

Noh said the ministry provided an allocation of RM300,000 for the park this year and hoped that its management would also focus on offering visitors fruity buffet, and overnight stay and fishing for visitors.

Besides the Mardi agro technology parks in Langkawi and Cameron Highlands, the MAHA site in Serdang and Bukit Cerakah Agro Park, both in Selangor, were also chosen by the ministry to promote agro tourism.

The Sheraton Langkawi Beach Resort is a wonderful place.

The Sheraton Langkawi Beach resort is a beautiful place to stay. The staff were friendly and always willing to go the extra mile for their clients.
It's a little far from the "town", but a taxi is so cheap it's not a problem.
We can eat in the hotel a few times and some places were quite good, but also we can go into town etc to eat (which was often better and more traditional).

The pool was a great place to relax, swim or grab a drink or bite to eat. Their private beach is just below the horizon pool and it was great to be able to go between the two.
There were animals and birds everywhere, it was beautiful. The spa at the hotel was also excellent and very relaxing - great massage and coconut body scrub!!
